The Kokoda Future Strategic Leaders' Program and USI of the ACT

USI of ACT will conduct a series of evening panels designed to engage our members and the wider public in debate on the forthcoming White Paper on Defence (WP15). There are three major events planned and designed in a way that will maximise our engagement with the National Security community in the ACT and region. We are meeting once at our traditional venue at the Australian Defence College, once in a community setting, and once again at a venue convenient to academia.

Our Panels have attracted high-profile members of academia, the media, and the Defence community to act as panellists and moderators. These are not-to-be missed events on the National Security agenda. We intend to document the outcomes of our meetings and expect to provide these to Government as part of it planned public engagement process.

FIRST EVENT - HYPOTHETICAL

Hypothetical – Future Challenges to Australia’s National Power and prosperity

Panellist - Gary Humphries
A former Federal Senator and ACT Chief Minister, Gary served in the ACT and Commonwealth parliaments for almost 25 years. He was first elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly in 1989, at the inauguration of self-government for the territory.

Panellist - Peter Leahy
Peter Leahy is the foundation Director of the National Security Institute at the University of Canberra. He retired from the Army in July 2008 year after a 37 year career as a soldier, concluding his career in the Army with 6 years as Chief of Army.

Panellist - John O'Callaghan
John is Executive Officer of the Australian Industry Group Defence Council, and has held a number of positions over the past 15 years, including Assistant Secretary, Capital Equipment Co-ordination, Department of Defence.

Panellist - Greg Sheridan
Greg Sheridan, The Australian’s foreign editor, is the most influential foreign affairs commentator in Australia. He entered journalism in 1979 as a staff writer for The Bulletin and joined The Australian newspaper in 1984 as an editorial writer and was appointed the paper’s first ever Beijing correspondent.

Correspondent - Chris Uhlmann
Chris Uhlmann is political editor for the ABC's 7.30. He previously co-hosted 666 ABC Canberra's top rating breakfast program, produced Mornings on 774 ABC Melbourne and worked as the chief political correspondent for ABC radio current affairs. He has also been political editor for ABC News, The 7.30 Report and ABC News 24.

Moderator - Andrew Kirby
Experienced in planning, policy, strategy and leadership, Andrew has a diverse background both in and out of the military. As an Army Officer he has held a variety of command and leadership roles, as well as being selected for a number of high profile staff and representational appointments.
