People Die for This?

Senator David Fawcett
Senator for South Australia

Monday 26 November 2012 at 6:00pm for 6:15 - 7:30pm

The Lowy Institute Survey (Jun 12) highlighted a low level of support for democracy as a form of Government in Australia, possibly due to perceptions drawn from television coverage of Question Time in the Parliament and the level of debate.
Elsewhere around the world however, the dream of Democracy causes people to sacrifice freedom and even their lives for the right to have a say in how their community, their city or their nation is governed.
Is there more to Australia’s form of democracy than meets the eye? One of the hidden strengths of Australia’s democratic system is the bi-cameral system and the system of Legislation and References  committees in the Senate. The recent Inquiry into Defence Procurement by the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee is one example of how this system works to strengthen transparency and accountability in Government.
