OVERVIEW

The announcement of the establishment of a Home Affairs portfolio in July 2017 heralded the most significant reform of Australia’s intelligence, security and law enforcement arrangements in decades. This change is designed to enhance Australia’s capability to respond to evolving and increasingly complex threats to our security. It will align existing intelligence and domestic security arrangements into a series of portfolio agencies operating under a centralised department, which will assume responsibility for cohesive strategic planning and policy coordination functions.

Integral in the successful implementation of such significant change, are those staff operating in mid-level management positions throughout impacted agencies. As such, the Institute For Regional Security will host a 2-day, retreat style, National Security Management Symposium for approximately 40 managers currently working in key roles, within these departments and agencies. A small number of places will also be offered to managers in key stakeholder positions outside the Home Affairs portfolio. This Symposium is designed to equip these key staff with a range of information and skills necessary to ensure not only a successful transition to the new framework, but to enable them to make a valuable ongoing contribution to the Portfolio.

A range of carefully selected, highly qualified, speakers will provide participants with:

-         An understanding of the strategic threat environment and political environment underpinning the establishment of the Home Affairs portfolio.

-         An introduction to the new policy operating model.

-         Detailed information on the breadth and operations of the Home Affairs portfolio.

-         Insight into the changing expectations and responsibilities of management staff.

The program format enables participants to ask questions and engage speakers in discussion following each presentation. IFRS is proud of its ability to facilitate discussions in a trusted environment. All discussions during the Symposium are conducted strictly under Chatham House Rule.

PARTICIPANTS
Mid-level managers from agencies within the Home Affairs Portfolio and key stakeholder organisations.

CHATHAM HOUSE RULE
