Keynote Speaker
Ms Frances Adamson
Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
As our closest neighbour, Australia’s relationship with Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of our most complex and wide ranging. Cooperation spans a range of economic, development, and immigration issues. In particular, PNG is of significant national security interest for Australia, including in relation to Australia’s strong commitment to support PNG’s hosting of APEC in 2018. But our relationship must be considered in the context of increasingly complex security dynamics in PNG, which affect both the stability and prosperity of the country. These include the growing influence of countries such as China in the PNG resource and infrastructure sectors and PNG's considerable internal development and security challenges.
This Congress will explore the evolving security dynamics in PNG and the opportunities and challenges this presents for Australia, including our regional leadership role
Other confirmed speakers/panel members include:
MAJGEN Greg Bilton AM, CSC, Deputy Chief Joint Operations Command, Department of Defence
Karl Claxton, Office of National Assessments
COL Luke Foster AM, CSC, CSM, International Policy Division, Department of Defence
David Garner, International SOS
Bal Kama, PhD candidate, Australian National University
Commander Perry Sundie, PNG Defence Force
Geoff Tooth, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Also invited to take part are senior executives and subject matter experts from the Australian Federal Police, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the Australian Council for International Development, and the Lowy Institute.
