As our closest neighbour, Australia’s relationship with Papua New Guinea (PNG) is one of our most complex and wide ranging. Cooperation spans a range of economic, development, and immigration issues. In particular, PNG is of significant national security interest for Australia, including in relation to Australia’s strong commitment to support PNG’s hosting of APEC in 2018. But our relationship must be considered in the context of increasingly complex security dynamics in PNG, which affect both the stability and prosperity of the country. These include the growing influence of countries such as China in the PNG resource and infrastructure sectors and PNG's considerable internal development and security challenges.

This Congress will explore the evolving security dynamics in PNG and the opportunities and challenges this presents for Australia, including our regional leadership role

The Congress will also provide Australia’s future strategic leaders with an introduction to the core skills necessary for working in the strategic environment, including:

• Strategic thinking – making the connections between operational and strategic outcomes
• Writing for national security – presenting information for decision making
• Negotiation and facilitation skills – working in groups and solving problems

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Early to mid-Career members of the national security community, those currently studying in the field and those who aspire to join the national security community.

Accommodation is shared student accommodation – it is basic but comfortable
