The need for innovation and transformation to Australia’s national security is well-established and has led to improvements in Australia’s defence, law enforcement and counter-terrorism capabilities. While innovation and transformation presents opportunities for government and industry, it also presents challenges.

Once future capability requirements have been identified, the process of research, development, procurement and implementation takes years, by which time, an organisations requirements and the environment they are operating in will have changed. Another recognised problem encountered with innovation and transformation is the difficulty in transitioning into commercial viability. This congress will explore what government, industry and research organisations need to do to keep ahead of the game and ensure Australia has robust national security into the future.

The congress will also provide Australia’s future strategic leaders with an introduction to the core skills necessary for working in the strategic environment, including:

  • Strategic thinking – making the connections between operational and strategic outcomes
  • Writing for national security – presenting information for decision making
  • Negotiation and facilitation skills – working in groups and solving problems
